When it comes to having your own small business in Canada you come to realize that it can get pretty expensive having to cover all those business startup costs.

To get help with these startup costs, business owners often turn to the Canadian government to access government funding such as grants, loans and tax breaks.

Finding these programs is some what of a challenge, since the funds are not provided just via the Canadian government but it’s various agencies.

So how do you apply for a government grant?

Applying for a government grant is no different then applying for a government loan or any type of funding. There are certain steps you have to follow:

Find the available funding programs which are available to you based on

  • Your location

  • The industry you’re in

  • Which cover the funding needs that you have

  • Ensure you meet the grant programs criteria and qualifications

To apply for a government grant you do have to ensure you’ve done the above. If you apply for the program without a business plan, it will be denied.

Applying to the wrong program and/or not meeting the criteria set by the government grant agency, you will be denied the funds.
